Latvian bank BIC (SWIFT) codes
Swedbank’s BIC in Latvia is HABALV22, SEB banka’s UNLALV2X, Citadele banka’s PARXLV22 and Luminor’s RIKOLV2X; the bank code inside a Latvian IBAN is the first four characters of that BIC. BIC and the IBAN bank code
A BIC (Business Identifier Code, often called a SWIFT code) identifies a bank or other payment institution. It has 8 or 11 characters: 4 for the institution, 2 letters for the country (LV), 2 for the location and, where needed, 3 for a branch. The long form ending in XXX means the head office, so HABALV22 and HABALV22XXX are the same bank.
Characters five to eight of a Latvian IBAN are the first four characters of the institution’s BIC, as Latvijas Banka sets out. So an IBAN starting LV.. HABA is a Swedbank account at a glance. Check the IBAN itself in the IBAN checker.
When you need a BIC
For euro credit transfers within Latvia and to other EU countries, a bank may not require the payer to give a BIC; the IBAN is enough (Regulation (EU) No 260/2012, article 5(7)). A BIC can still be needed for payments outside the EU and EEA and in other currencies, which is why invoices often print it next to the IBAN.
What the list covers
The list has the banks registered in Latvia, foreign bank branches with their own Latvian code, Latvijas Banka, the State Treasury, and other payment service providers whose customers get Latvian IBANs with the provider’s code. Institutions serving Latvia without a code of their own, for example with another country’s IBANs, are not in it. If an IBAN’s bank code is not in the table, it was mistyped or the institution is no longer on the Latvijas Banka list.
