How a Latvian IBAN is built

A Latvian IBAN has 21 characters: the country code LV, two check digits, four letters that are the start of the bank’s BIC, and a 13-character account number. That is why the bank can be read from the IBAN itself: HABA is Swedbank, UNLA is SEB banka, PARX is Citadele banka. The full table is on Latvian bank BIC codes.

Electronically an IBAN is written without spaces; on paper, such as an invoice, in groups of four. The tool accepts both, as well as dashes or a leading “IBAN” label.

What the check digits test

The check digits follow ISO 7064 MOD 97-10. The first four characters move to the end, letters become numbers (A = 10, B = 11, up to Z = 35), and the remainder of that number divided by 97 must be 1. This catches a single mistyped character and two neighbouring digits swapped.

Before the check digits, the tool compares the length and character pattern with the SWIFT IBAN Registry structure for the country, so a Latvian IBAN with digits where the bank code belongs is rejected at that step.

What the check cannot tell you

A valid IBAN is well formed. It does not mean the account exists, is open, or belongs to the payee you expect; only the bank knows that. If a supplier’s bank details suddenly change on an invoice, confirm by a phone number or email you already had, not the contacts on that invoice.

For euro credit transfers within Latvia and to other EU countries, a bank may not require the payer to give a BIC (Regulation (EU) No 260/2012, article 5(7)), so a correct IBAN is enough. A BIC can still be needed for payments to countries outside the EU and EEA.
