On 24/09/2026 the Register of Enterprises held 221,154 active entities, 139,476 of them limited liability companies (SIA), and 37.9% of all were registered VAT payers. In 2026 up to 24 September, 9,181 new entities were registered and 4,799 removed, 6.8% more registrations than in the same period of 2025.

Active entities with a foreign address, or an old one that cannot be placed in a single municipality, are left out of the table: 389.

How the figures are compiled

The figures come from the Register of Enterprises open data, which Fakts loads every night. They cover every entity in the register: merchants, associations, foundations, farms, religious organisations, mass media outlets and others.

An entity is active if it has not been removed from the register. That includes companies that are dormant or in liquidation, since they are still on the register.

Registered is the date an entity was entered in the register; removed is the date it was taken off. Removal can follow liquidation, reorganisation or another ground, and the tables count them together.

VAT payers are entities with an active registration in the VID register of VAT payers. VAT registrations of natural persons are not counted.

The municipality comes from the legal address in the register, mapped to the municipalities in force since the 2021 reform. Varakļāni Municipality has been part of Madona Municipality since 30 June 2024. Foreign addresses and a few old addresses that cannot be placed in a single municipality are left out of the municipality table.

Figures for the current year run to the newest registration date in the data, so they are compared with the same period of the year before rather than with a full year.

How many companies are there in Latvia?
On 24/09/2026 the Register of Enterprises held 221,154 active entities. 139,476 of them are limited liability companies; the rest are associations, farms, individual merchants and other forms.
How many companies are VAT payers?
83,800 of the active entities, or 37.9%, are registered VAT payers. Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed €50,000 in a calendar year.
What does “active” mean?
An entity that has not been removed from the Register of Enterprises. A company that is dormant or in liquidation counts as active until it is removed.
How are liquidated companies counted?
By the date the entity was removed from the register. Removal can follow liquidation, reorganisation or another ground, and the statistics count them together.
How is a company’s municipality determined?
From its legal address in the Register of Enterprises. Old addresses naming a municipality that existed before the 2021 reform are placed in the municipality that territory belongs to now.
